Engineer the Future
1st Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering (JAGFOE) Symposium
“Advanced Materials and Systems for Sustainable Society”
The JAGFOE Symposium provided a platform for young researchers from Japan and Germany to learn from one another across a wide range of themes, from advanced materials to sustainable engineering systems. By bringing together diverse stakeholders from academia, industry, and government, the symposium fostered research exchange and networking that will serve as a foundation for future international research partnerships.

Policy Proposal
As a unique non-governmental engineering academy, EAJ can propose authentic third opinions for all the parties concerned.
– Dialogue between Policy Makers and Scientists
Since 2020, EAJ organizes dialogue sessions with policy makers, focusing on its policy recommendations and recent project activities.
– Research on the Current Status and Future of Women Engineers
Japan faces an urgent need to promote women’s participation in engineering and ICT fields amid demographic challenges and rapid digitalization. Building on its urgent policy recommendations, EAJ is now advancing further research through survey collaboration with CAETS member academies. A new policy proposal will be published this summer.

Inter-academy Meetings
CAETS
(International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences)
CAETS currently comprises engineering academies from 31 countries, with one representative academy from each country. EAJ became Japan’s representative member in 1990. Through its participation in CAETS, EAJ continues to strengthen its international collaboration and contribute to the global engineering community.
EA-RTM
(East Asia Round Table Meeting of Academies of Engineering)
EA-RTM is a non-profit and non-governmental association with science, engineering and technology interests. It was founded by the engineering academies of Japan (EAJ), China (CAE), and Korea (NAEK). Since the first meeting was held in Osaka in 1997, the three academies have hosted the round-table meeting and an international symposium on topics of common interest on a rotating basis.
AEPM
(Academy of Engineering Presidents’ Meeting)
AEPM was proposed by EAJ and has been held during the STS forum since 2011. It brings together presidents and senior representatives of engineering academies from around the world for dialogue on issues of shared international concern, drawing on case examples from participating countries. Going forward, EAJ aims to strengthen cooperation with its other committees to further develop AEPM as a forum for promoting international policy dialogue.
Multi-disciplinary Programs for Fostering Young Leaders
JAFOE
(Japan-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium) by NAE-JST-EAJ
JAFOE is an interdisciplinary symposium jointly organized by EAJ and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE) since 2000, with Japan-side activities supported by JST. Held biennially in Japan and the United States in turn, it gathers about 60 early-career researchers (30 from each country) — from private companies as well as universities and public research institutions — who spend three days discussing four newly selected topics in leading-edge engineering. The symposium, including its topics, program, and choice of speakers and discussants, is planned and run entirely by the young researchers themselves, offering a rare, high-density venue for cross-disciplinary exchange across the four topics and fostering discussions and the seeds of collaborative research not easily found at conventional academic conferences.
ERLEP
(Australia-Japan Emerging Research Leaders Exchange Program)
ERLEP is a bilateral exchange program for emerging research leaders, established in 2008 under a Japan–Australia governmental agreement by JSPS, EAJ, and ATSE, giving young and mid-career researchers opportunities to visit leading institutions in the partner country and build lasting professional networks. Today advanced jointly by EAJ and ATSE, the program has built a network of 64 alumni, and the two academies are now exploring its next stage — developing this alumni community into a sustainable, internationally influential network through joint forums and symposiums in both countries aimed at long-term strategy and proposals for international academic collaboration.
JAGFOE
(Japan-Germany Frontiers of Engineering Symposium) by EAJ-acatech
JAGFOE is a biennial symposium jointly organized by EAJ and its German partner organizations to promote collaboration between young researchers in Japan and Germany. It brings together early-career researchers from universities, public research institutes, and industry to exchange ideas, build professional networks, and lay the foundation for future collaborative research through presentations and discussions.
